Spring Cleaning!

As Spring quickly approaches, it might be time to think about Spring cleaning for your living space. Hopefully, Covid-19 will soon be in our past and those house parties that we all love will be back into full swing- that’s even more incentive to get excited about cleaning the house! While it may seem simple enough, cleaning and reorganizing an entire house can seem daunting for many, particularly if cleaning up is the first step in preparation for a home sale. We’ve broken it down into some easy steps to make the process more manageable.

  1. Determine why you want to clean

Are you looking to sell your home this Spring? If so, “spring cleaning” may involve reorganizing, hiring a staging company, and possibly a remodel as well as a good, deep cleaning. You’ll want to start early on this process and potentially set a budget and project plan as well to ensure you can get everything done in time. If you are looking to host parties this summer, then a thorough cleaning and reorganization may fit the bill. If you’re more introverted, perhaps just a good sweep, mop, and tidying up is all you need.

2. Do you need new cleaning supplies?

There’s nothing worse for respreading germs and dust around your house than an old mop and a vacuum that releases more dust into the air than it takes in. Make sure your cleaning supplies are up to snuff, and invest in new supplies if needed. With new stimulus checks coming in, this could be a good time to think about some of those fancier cleaning items you’ve always dreamed of, like a robotic vacuum. This technology has come a long way since a decade ago when vacuums blindly bumped into things all day until they decided they’d had enough. Now, many models include radar detection, AI mapping software, WiFi connectivity, and other features that make them truly useful household cleaning assistants.

3. A good time for a better environment?

Spring cleaning could also be a good time to think about tools that automatically create a healthier environment for you and your family, without breaking the bank. An air purifier can reduce those pesky seasonal allergies, while a dehumidifier is a must-have for basements and enclosed spaces in Virginia’s humid climate. Have you had your water tested? If your facets build up calcium around the edges, you may need a water softener.

4.  Make sure to clean everywhere

Spring cleaning should be a time for deeper household cleaning than you would normally undertake. Think about all those areas that you don’t normally think about- under the bed, on top of the kitchen cabinets, even the cracks on the window sills- and scrub them well. The idea here is to clean much more thoroughly than you normally would to avoid having to do so again for a good while.

5. Enjoy yourself!

Cleaning the house may not be the most enjoyable activity, but it doesn’t have to be any more bothersome than it already is. Put on some music; get some family or friends involved and make it a cleaning party; or decide first on what your reward will be for finishing the cleaning. 2020 has been depressing in many ways, but we can use Spring cleaning as a way to set the stage for brighter days ahead.
